Inspiration for Ideas

Homeschooling is a treat. It really is. I love to write down projects and school work down in my planner. And the kiddos love following a list. BUT a few days yo just do not want to do anything. So what I do is go on a "field trip" or take the kids to go see some friends they have not seen in a while. You can actually be inspired by visiting other places. It happens for us. We go to the museum and look for different ways to incorporate the displays in a subject for school work. Take a couple of pictures, go home and talk about it and then find a documentary or a worksheet, (make a worksheet). Going to the park. Ask your kids to name the types of trees that they find. Take a pine-cone home and make a diagram out of it. There could be some really fun stuff to do. I think we are going to make some leaf art. Have Fun! Pictures will follow

Geography

For ages 8-12 and the cost is $10.32

Product Description

Whoever said that learning about U.S. geography had to be boring must not have read The Scrambled States of America. We fell head-over-heels for Laurie Keller?s hilarious story and knew that it had the making for a great game. As with her book, we hope our game provides a fun way to enrich basic knowledge of U.S. geography. Players learn the names, capitals, nicknames, shapes and positions of the states through a myriad of visual teasers, language riddles and geography challenges. After playing, you?ll see that there?s more to the 50 States than meets the eye! HOW TO PLAY: Quick! Find a state that ends with the letter A. Now find one that borders Tennessee. Have fun learning about the United States in this madcap game of observation and quick reflexes. Collect cards by matching states to a Scramble card. Or ?Go the Distance? and find a state?s closest neighbor. Whoever scrambles to match and collect the most state cards wins. 2 to 4 Players. Playing Time: About 20 minutes

Happy Weekend

Is finally Saturday! I have collards cooking on the stove and next to them is some lima beans, the big ones and some super yummy buttery cornbread. The house smells just like grandmas. While we are hanging around watching various football games, I decided to check out some new sites to use for my pre-k homescooling child. Its called Pley, you RENT LEGOS. They wont even charge you if you loose a piece. Its kind of like netflix, but with legos. Do you use legos in your homeschool? If so would like to share how?

Helping....Giving the answers???

How many of you find yourself giving the answers to math problems or any other subject only to feel like you should not have done that in fear that now they might not know. My answer to that is to rearrange the question/problem and re-introduce it back to them. Sometimes giving them the answer eases the brain and their frustration of trying to get it right. That of course is TOTALLY my OPINION. It seems to work with us. Remember how happy you were when you found out in school that your quiz or test was open book?!
What are some of the ways you help out your kids?

Writing

Its SCHOOL time. I really LOVE getting up and having the house to myself briefly as I prep the day. I make the kids a different breakfast every morning, I like to fix something delicious looking that the pioneer woman makes, fried rice and egg, pancakes, or just a big bowl of cereal.

My teen has a writing lesson today. Yesterday she was asked to make a dream board (picture to the right). She will be writing a short essay on what she will be like in 5 years. I would love to see how these two activities she does relate with each other. I found a really impressive circle chart that helps her to use different words using the same meaning:

A little something I found on our nature walk this afternoon. Love is EVERYWHERE!

Taking school to the bookstore

Today we started our day with math. We use Khan, we think that Khan is pretty cool. You have to get a certain amount (5) right and then it takes you to the next level. Khan also has videos to help you. Pretty cool!
After that we hopped in the car and headed to Books-A-Million. I needed to buy a practice book for Language Arts and maybe some Math. Summer Bridge Activitys is the book I purchased.  We sat there in a different atmosphere and had school.

"Eclectic" Curriculum

When it comes to finding what curriculum I would like to use...I just sit down at my computer desk and start typing subjects that I think would inspire my daughter. I (of course) look on pinterest under other homeschoolers. There are tons and tons of ideas, worksheets, blogs and web pages. We also check out some consignment shops around town. You would be surprised at some of the books you would find out there. Co-ops are  great as well. Also on facebook there are many groups that are dedicated to us homeschooler, you can gather some really good information from others and maybe 1 or 2 is selling some of there curriculum. So go ahead get out there and get inspired. Here is a link to my pinterest homeschool board just to get you started. Enjoy
